MUSICIANS SOAR IN UNLIKELY SETTINGReview. Kym, Dukes, Walton, Brown Piano Quartet
5*****
You sometimes chance upon a concert in the most unlikely of places that transcends all you have heard before – this was such an evening.
If you took time to look at the line-up you would, of course, have realised we were about to hear four of the UK’s finest musicians making a rare appearance together. The pianist, Ian Brown having played with many of the world’s great chamber ensembles.
And so they launched into Frank Bridges Phantasy for Piano Quartet, ears taking a few minutes to adjust to the church’s resonant acoustic but immediately bowled over by the passion and beauty of tone produced by the strings.
It wasn’t just the technical excellence of the playing, but the rapport that perfectly balanced the various strands in Beethoven’s E flat Piano quartet. The fulsome tone of Philip Dukes Viola holding the centre ground with such artistry. But the most remarkable performance was yet to come with Faure ‘s Second Piano Quartet.
I think I have reviewed every recording of the work but none has matched this sustained radiance and energy, the unfailingly perfect intonation of the violinist Min-Jin Kym matched by the vibrancy of Jamie Walton’s cello.
